What I want to learn about sustainability
I wish to broaden my knowledge on sustainability throughout the semester in order to more fully understand how it applies to planning contemporary urban areas. I am particularly interested in the connections between sustainable development and gentrification. This is of interest to be because I believe the public majority has a notion that "sustainable" practices may only be viable options for certain demographics, as related "green" initiatives have a tendency to be available ad realistic for certain social classes over others. I think social equality is another significant aspect of successful urban planning, and it is especially imperative in today's increasingly urbanized human society. Sustainability and it's effects should encompass the potential of society at large (including ALL of it's inhabitants) and should improve existing social conditions, not exacerbate them. In UP136, I want to be able to know more about how current and past sustainable practices have produced inconsistent outcomes for bettering the human condition and how to be a socially responsible AND sustainable planner.
